Fruit Picking

Alia had the day off from school on Friday so I decided to make it a mommy and me event and take her fruit picking. The summer fruit season just started and there was an abundance of fruit to pick at the u-pick farms. The weather was nice and cool, not too hot and since it was a Friday we beat the weekend crowds. We drove out to the fruit farms in Brentwood (just a short 1 hour drive from where we live) and went to two farms picking strawberries, blackberries, apricots, plums, and cherries.

Since all the fruit were either on the ground or low hanging, Alia was able to actually pick them. She had such a blast running through the fields, picking fruit, and sitting down to eat as a break. It was one of the best and most memorable days I've ever had with her.

We're planning to turn most of our pickings into fruit turnovers and mini pies.

Here are photos of our day. Warning it's a picture heavy post - just had so many good photo ops with the fruit in full bounty!

strawberries are great for kids with little hands - easy to pull and on the ground

Strawberry field

juicy sweet and delicious free of pesticides

Alia was so proud of her just picked strawberries

Busy farmer

Blackberry picking

Alia loved to touch and smell everything at the farm

the blackberry bushes were rampant with berries - Alia LOVES any kind of berries and was eating them all while picking (I gave up on the not washing them - at least I knew they were pesticide free)

Apricot picking

Apricot trees were low enough for Alia to reach

Apricot trees in full bloom

Cherries! So many of them.

Taking a much needed break eating - mostly blackberries

The fruits of our labor. Planning to make fruit turnovers.
